Strong Like Bull Scholarship

in Honor of LtCol Michael Marriott

Mike “Snapper” Marriott was born in Herkimer, New York, on December 22, 1953. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1976 and later earned his Master’s degree from the University of Southern California School of System Management. In 1976, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant into the Marine Aviation at which he began his 26-year career as a Marine. His successful career included operational tours in the A-6 Intruder, a graduation from the US Navy’s Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, flight test pilot at VX-5 in China Lake, California, transition into the F/A-18 Hornet, and ultimately Commander of the Marine All-weather Fighter Attack Squadron 22: The Vikings.

Upon retirement from the Marines Corps, Mike found his home in Coronado, where he remained for 16 years.  He contributed his Marine knowledge and experience into the Defense Industry, but was best known for his coaching skills as a Level 1 CrossFit instructor at CrossFit Coronado. Mike was quick to help others gain confidence and strength through his positive, encouraging, and compassionate mentoring. Mike will always be known for his huge heart, his quick wit, his vast generosity and long list of those who call him “friend.”  His legacy continues to inspire us to work hard, be generous, and always find the light, even in the darkness.

We created a scholarship to honor Mike and help his legacy to live on in the Coronado community.  This scholarship is open to graduating seniors living in the 92118 zip code. Seniors who live in Coronado, but attend other high schools may also apply.  Recipients will receive $500 to go towards expenses as they pursue further education.  Please submit the following application by May 31 June 4 (deadline extended).  If you prefer to submit your application by email you may send an email directly to in lieu of submitting the online form below.
